Category 1

Category I Student Groups have access to the following:

  • Annual Budgeting

  • Rolling Appeals to the Treasury

  • Flat Funding

The Budget Cycle

During the Spring semester of each academic year, Category I groups will have the opportunity to submit a budget for the following academic (fiscal) year. In this budget, groups will be able to request funding for up to three of their highest priority events that they can reasonably estimate the costs for as well as any overhead and equipment expenses the group will need to exist throughout the year.

After budget submission, members of the Budget Committee of SU Treasury will meet with each group to get a better understanding of the nature of each request. The committee will then convene throughout the Spring semester to review each budget and make allocation decisions.

After all the allocations have been completed and released, the Budget Committee will hold post-allocation office hours to answer any questions that arise.

Any budget-related questions can be directed to the Budget Committee Chair at budget@su.wustl.edu.

Appeals to Treasury and the VPF

CAT I groups may submit rolling appeals to the Treasury or the VPF. Appeals totalling over $1,000 are reviewed by the Treasury. Appeals below $1,000 are reviewed by the Vice President of Finance.

For information on how to submit appeals and the timeline for their review, look here

Changing Your Group’s Category

Category Changes are done annually during the Fall Semester and are overseen by the SU Activities Committee. Applications for upgrades are due by TBD on WUGO. For more information, contact activities@su.wustl.edu.

The Category Change Application will be available on WUGO soon. New Category status will take effect at the start of the following semester. This process occurs annually in the fall semester.

  • After applying, the Activities Committee Chair (AC Chair) will send an email to schedule a meeting with the student group

  • The student group will prepare a 5-minute presentation

    • The presentation should address the following:

      • Summary of Group Mission

      • Summary of Past Events/Programming

      • How and why your group would benefit from an upgrade

      • Breakdown of Past Spending

  • After the presentation, the Activities Committee Team (ACT) will go into Q&A for around 5 minutes

  • Then the ACT will make a recommendation to the Activities Committee about whether a group should be upgraded or not.

  • The Activities Committee will discuss the recommendation.

  • Finally, AC will vote on the decision, and the group will be informed of the decision and rationale through email

Starting a New Group

For guidelines on starting a new group, Campus Life has provided an article here.

  • The Organization Registration Form is available now on WUGO (Forms tab). Groups that are already registered through Campus Life, but are seeking SU Recognition, should fill out the ‘SU Recognition Application’ form instead. Before completing the respective form, prospective groups are required to meet with the Assistant Director for Student Groups and Student Involvement, Scott Williams (scott.williams@wustl.edu .

  • If a group wishes to be SU-recognized, the deadline to fill out either ‘Organization Registration’ or ‘SU Recognition Application’ is TBD. New SU-recognition (and CAT III) status will take effect at the start of the following semester. This process will now only occur in the fall semester.

  • After applying, the Activities Committee Chair (AC Chair) and Campus Life will review your application and may send you emails with questions regarding your group

  • Each new group will meet with members of the Activities Committee and these members will then present on the new groups and the committee will then ask questions, discuss, and vote on the group

  • After the decision has been made, the AC Chair will email the group and inform them of the decision and the rationale

Please reach out to the Activities Committee Chair at activities@su.wustl.edu if you have any questions.
